Recipes
This guide will cover everything you need to know about managing your recipes with Recimate.
Creating
To start creating a recipe, navigate to your cookbook by clicking on the Recimate logo in the top left of the screen. On the cookbook screen, click on the "Create Recipe" button located on the top left of the center display. If on mobile there will be a button with a "+" in the bottom right of the screen. Clicking this button will bring you to the create recipe page.
Once on the create recipe page, you should see an empty recipe card. To input your recipe into the card, click on the field you would like to edit and start typing.
Recipe Fields
The following is a list of the fields you can input data into and how you can use them.
Recipe Image
To add an image to the recipe, you can click the camera icon above the name input. This will open a menu allowing you to select the desired image. If no recipe image is provided, a default image will be used.
Recipe Name
To input a name for your recipe, click on the input field "Your recipe name here!". Once your cursor is in the field, type in the name you would like to save your recipe under. Don't worry, you can always come back and change this later if you decide you want to use a different name.
Time
In Recimate, you are able to specify both the prep and cook time for your recipe. Click on the input underneath either the prep or cook time. Once your cursor is within the input, you can type your time. The way we display the time is HH:MM, where the first two digits specify the hours and the last two specify the minutes. Inputting a time in this format is much like setting a timer on the microwave, if you want to specify 1 hour, you would type: 1-0-0. To specify 30 minutes you would type 3-0. You do not need to type the ":" to divide the hours from the minutes, this will be automatically added.
You can specify time for either prep time, cook time, or both. The total time of the recipe will be automatically calculated based on the prep and cook times inputted. As you input the prep and cook times, you should see the total time updating.
Description
This field is optional, meaning you do not need to provide a description of your recipe. However, if you would like to, you can type your description into the field found within the "Description" section.
Servings
The servings input is located at the top right of the "Ingredients" section. The servings are used for calculating nutrition information on a per-serving basis and for scaling the recipe when you wish to make different amounts of the recipe.
Ingredients
There are two ways to input ingredients into a recipe. The first you will see is a big text field which allows you to type your ingredients in an easy fashion.
Text Field Ingredient Input
The text field ingredient input, is one big field that allows you to type your ingredients in one place. After finishing the recipe and clicking on the "Review" button at the bottom of the empty recipe card, Recimate will attempt to match what you typed to ingredients in our database. This enables nutrition information calculations, and, in the future, will be used to combine ingredients from multiple recipes for grocery lists.
The text field expects your ingredients to be input in a specific way. Each ingredient should get it's own line. On each line you should input the amount, the units, and the ingredient. Here is an example of input for the ingredients
3 eggs
4 cups flour
1 whole banana
Avocado
If there are no units (an avocado), you can just leave the unit out. If there is no amount specified, Recimate will assume there is only one (cup flour). Amounts can be specified in whole numbers (1,2,3), fractions (1/4, 3/8), or decimals (0.5, 0.25). If you have typos in your ingredients, don't worry, Recimate will try to detect what you meant and allow you to review it in the review step.
Ingredients can also be segmented into different sections. This can be used to organize the ingredients in a recipe into their different components. For example you could have a cup cake recipe where you break out the ingredients for the cake and the ingredients for the frosting. To indicate an ingredient section, you type "---Section Name---" on it's own line. Any ingredients under that line will be included in this section. You can also have ingredients before any section is defined, which creates a section but with no name which includes all ingredients before the first section is defined. For example:
2 cups flour
1 pint milk
1/4 cups powdered sugar
---Section 1---
2 avocados
1 slice toast
---Section 2---
0.5 ounces ground beef
would create 3 sections. The first would have no name and include the 2 cups flour, 1 pint milk, and 1/4 cups powdered sugar. The second would be named "Section 1" and include 2 avocados and 1 slice of toast. The third would be named "Section 2" and include the half-ounce of ground beef. Sections can be renamed, added, and removed after the creation of a recipe, so no worries if you are not sure exactly what sections you want.
Review Ingredients Input
After clicking review at the bottom of the create recipe page, Recimate will try to match your input with ingredients in our database. This gives you a chance to ensure we accurately matched your recipe's ingredients.
For each ingredient you will see 3 fields. The first is the amount, the second is the unit of measure, and the third is the name of the ingredient. Underneath these fields, you will see the text that you had inputted for this ingredient.
To modify the amount, click into the corresponding field and enter the correct amount.
To correct the units, click into the corresponding field. As you type your unit, some options will be recommended based on the information we have on that ingredient. If you don't see your unit specified, no worries, you can type whatever unit you want. Leaving the unit field blank means there is no unit. For example, with "2 avocados", there is no unit apart from the ingredient name.
To correct the ingredient name, click into the corresponding field. As you type, Recimate will search it's database to suggest different ingredients we have information on. If you see the ingredient you are looking for, click on the ingredient and it will populate the field with the ingredient name. If you do not see your ingredient listed, no worries, you can type whatever ingredient you want whether or not we know about it.
Any time you use an ingredient or unit that we do not have information on, we create a request on our end to add nutrition information for that ingredient. You do not have to do any additional steps for this to happen. We will then work to add the nutrition information as soon as we can.
In the review ingredients input, you are also able to rearrange your ingredients within ingredient sections, and even move ingredients between sections. To do this, hover your mouse over the ingredient. To the left of the amount field, you should see 6 dots appear. By click and dragging those 6 dots, you can rearrange your ingredients.
To add additional ingredients, click the "Add Ingredient" button. To add a new section, click the "Add Section" button.
To remove ingredients, hover over the ingredient. An "x" icon should appear to the right of the ingredient. You can click that "x" icon to remove the ingredient. You can do the same to remove sections.
Directions
The directions section is where you can input the steps to create and prepare your recipe. These are re-arrangeable by the 6 dots to the left of the directions field that appear when you hover your mouse over the direct.
To add another direction you can click the "Add Step" button. Additionally, if you tap the "Enter" button on your keyboard while within the last direction, another direction will be added. To remove a direction, click the "x" icon to the right of the direction.
Notes
The notes section is where you can include any tips or tricks to making your recipe that may not be included within the directions. These can be rearranged, added, and deleted just as the directions section mentioned above.
Creating the Recipe
After you have filled in the recipe's information, you can click the "Review" button at the bottom of the recipe card. This will try to match the ingredients from the ingredient input to ingredients within our database. Please review the ingredients section again. For more information see the above section on the ingredients field. Once this has been done you can click the "Create" button at the bottom of the recipe card. This will calculate an estimate for the nutrition information of the recipe, and then save the recipe. After saving the recipe, you will be automatically redirected to your new recipe!
While creating the recipe if you see a notice saying some of the ingredients were not in our database, this just means we did not have nutrition information for all the ingredients used in the recipe. We will work to add information for these ingredients. Once they are added, you can edit your recipe and save without making any change. This will refresh the nutrition information to include any updates to ingredient nutrition we have added.
Viewing
To view a recipe, you can click on the recipe name or image from the cookbook page.
Editing
To edit an ingredient, you need to get to the recipe editing page. You can do this in one of two ways:
- On the Cookbook page, you can click the vertical 3 dots icon associated with the recipe. This opens a menu in which you can select "Edit".
- From the view recipe page, you can click the pencil icon to the right of the recipe image.
The recipe editing page is identical to the recipe creation page. The only difference is there is no review process. The ingredients input is already set to the Review Ingredients Input as specified above.
Clicking "Cancel" at the bottom of the recipe card will discard any changes made. Clicking "Update" at the bottom of the card will save your changes and recalculate the recipe's estimated nutrition information.
Sharing
There are multiple methods to sharing a recipe with another person. To start you must get into the recipe sharing modal. This can be done by clicking the share icon on the view, create, or editing recipe page.
Within this modal you are given two options. By default, the recipe will be restricted. This means that the only user who can view your recipe are those you explicitly allow. The other option is "Anyone with Link". With this option, anyone with the link to your recipe is able to view your recipe.
To allow anyone with the link to view your recipe, click the dropdown and select "Anyone with Link". You can then click the "Copy Link" button to copy the link and share with your friends.
To allow specific users to view the recipe, keep the dropdown on "Restricted". Then in the text field, type in the username or email of the user you wish to share the recipe with. As you type, Recimate will search for the user you are trying to add. If you see them, you can select their name from the suggested names. Then click the "Add" button to the right of the text field. You should see their username/email appear bellow the "Allowed Users" section. To remove a user, click the "Remove" button beside their name.
Currently, you are only able to add 5 allowed users to a recipe. Anybody that can view your recipe can like, print, and add your recipe to one of their tabs.
Additionally, if your recipe is in a tab you own, and you share that tab with someone, they will be able to view your recipe.
Deleting
To delete a recipe, from the cookbook page, select the vertical 3 dots that are associated with the recipe. In the dropdown select "Delete". A confirmation window will popup. Click "OK" to proceed, or "Cancel" to cancel. After a few seconds, you will see your cookbook page refresh and you will notice your recipe is no longer there.
